Hello everyone and greetings from Warsaw,

Since October 2015 I am studying at Kozminski University and I am absolutely happy about my decision to study and live in Warsaw. Not one single second I rued my decision not to study in Munich (my Hometown) or somewhere in Germany. Most of my high expectations and hopes about studying at KU are fulfilled or exceeded.

Before I describe my studies I want to tell you something about myself. After a traineeship as a banker and my tenure as banker at BayernLB, I decided to start studying bachelors in Ingolstadt with specializations in Finance and Real Estate Management. In this period I was also doing internships in a Small Cap Investment bank, in the Treasury Department of Volkswagen and as Working Student in the VR-Bank. Additionally I attended an exchange semester in India (6 month) and following this I travelled for 5 month Southeast Asia.

The most pressing question for you is probably why Poland and why Kozminski University?

For me it was really important to study abroad and I also didn`t want to choose the standard route. The internationality and the good economic situation in Warsaw was one of the key drivers of my decision. Certainly, it was also triggered by the good Financial Times Ranking as well as the accreditations (AACSB, AMBA und EQUIS). However, the most important aspect is the practical Business School approach. Additionally, Kozminski University has very international environment as it has students from 60 nations as well as frequently international lecturer from praxis and from well-known universities. A huge network of well reputed partner universities gives KU additional international exposure and recognition. Classes are divided in groups with limited numbers of students and it is always possible to interact and speak with the lecturers in private. Another important aspect is the flexibility of KU, for example I am allowed to attend two specialisations (Corporate Finance & International Banking) instead of one. Furthermore enables KU students of the second year to start working because KU is scheduling all classes in the evening. KU is very well connected with International Banks as well as consulting Companies especially with Citigroup. Before making my final decision I called various HR Departments of the DAX companies as well as major consulting companies and International Banks to confirm the awareness of KU.

My dream about a university with a real practical approach is definitely fulfilled as out of 14 exams, I have given only two as paper test and the rest was made on the computer with excel and other software`s. Apart from all my subjects in KU, I enjoyed Corporate Finance the most. This subjects is incredibly good and especially Mr. Mielcarz is absolutely crazy about the practical usage of Valuation, Modelling and so on. Every second with him is beneficial for our future career. Additionally is he one of the best lecturers I ever had, even though he is sometimes too fast, he is still patient enough to explain it again and again. Corporate finance in Kozminski is oriented on CFA Program and KU was awarded for this approach recently by the CFA society in Poland. From my perspective it is difficult to find a better Corporate Finance Program with such a huge share of practical usage. For someone like me, who studied in Germany, it is completely a different approach, but in an absolutely positive way. All subject are focused on the practical use and based on case studies as well as recent research, this leads to a huge workload but it’s totally worth it. The KU lives up to the expectations of a world class Business School.

A short comment about Warsaw itself, the polish might not always look happy but they are absolutely friendly and willing to help. It’s no problem at all to get around with English and the public transport is efficient and cheap (3 month, 35€). The polish food is amazing and the international cuisine is present all over Warsaw, from Japanese- through Israeli- to Georgian food (my personal favourite). From a party perspective, Warsaw is a really diverse place, you can find everything in Warsaw from Beach clubs to Pubs to stylish Bars etc. and about the parties in the summer I heard a lot of positive stuff. Even though Warsaw offers everything it still is more affordable than any other big city in Europe I know.

Unfortunately there are two point which I am not perfectly happy with. Some subjects are not as good as the others but I guess that’s everywhere the case and if you want to specialize in Accounting, KU might not be the best choice. But nevertheless Kozminski University wants to lift up the Accounting track to ACCA standard so I guess it will improve in the next years.

Overall I can say that Kozminski University is a great University and a great Chance for my future career.

Daniel
