Earth Day has come and gone… but it made me wonder how me or any average student can help our planet more often than just once a year.
I decided to make a research and write an article about it with my own reflections.
1. STOP USING PLASTIC CUPS…
The concept of this article came to my head when i was pouring a homemade coffee to my new REUSABLE Starbucks plastic cup bought few weeks ago (and almost forgotten) but Earth Day seemed to be a good time to use it for the first time. It cost 9.99zł and i bought it at Starbucks at Nowy Świat. It’s price of your daily latte.
The same thing is with a bottle for water to school or gym – I bought mine at H&M. Thanks to that, I do not need to buy small water bottles everyday – I just buy one 5l one to home and refill my cool bottle. I save money and reduce amount of plastic bottles I use just once.
2. … STOP USING PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS EITHER!
There are so many cool material shopping bags – you just put one to your purse in the morning or just take it before leaving for grocery shopping :) I bet you have got at least one on your own that you got for free during some cool workshops etc but if not, you can always buy one HERE
3. DON’T CHOOSE PRODUCTS IN PLASTIC BOXES
Nowadays supermarkets are full of food in plastic boxes, food that can be bought also without them: vegetables or fruits. Think about it next time while grocery shopping. Choose the apples without a package, do not put onions in the plastic bag just to get the price sticker – you can stick it on them or on something else instead.
Plastic packages are also found in other shops and places – try to avoid buying products like this.
4. USE PLASTIC BAGS MORE THAN ONCE
There are many ways to use them more times: to prevent your lunch box from opening in your bag or as a trash bag. I heard even about clothes made from plastic bags…
5. TAKE A RIDE ON YOUR BIKE!
You will lose extra calories before the bikini season and help our planet. If you don’t have your own bike – use Veturilo city bikes! In other cases, public transport is still more eco than using your own car.
It is something so easy to do… Once you start doing it, you try to teach your friends that they should have at least 3 trash bins. In most flats, there is not enough space for it so I have one main trash bin in the kitchen and use one big paper bag (from clothes’ companies) as a paper trash bin and one big plastic bag for plastic. The same thing with glass. Bags can be even in other rooms than kitchen (just try to put there clean boxes etc to prevent bad smell).
